Four things to consider when designing landscaping for your commercial construction project

A commercial construction project with landscaped grass in front of it.When designing a commercial construction space, the landscaping surrounding the project may just seem like the cherry on top. But in fact, it is an integral part of your building and should highlight the architecture, not be thrown in at the last moment.

Here are four things we always consider when designing the landscaping in our commercial construction projects:

Location

Not only do you have to decide where new plants will live, but you must also consider how tall they will grow and if they will properly accent your building. Your landscape can also direct the flow of traffic by creating walkways or highlighting your building entrance with plants that stand out.

Energy efficiency

Large trees planted near windows can provide shade to cut cooling costs in Florida or the southeastern United States’ hot summer months. You can also keep the outside of your building lit 24 hours a day by using solar lights to keep walkways safe. If your property’s irrigation system is out of date, it could be costing you thousands of dollars each year. Make sure key features like rain sensors and timers are working correctly and are set properly.

Native plant species

Plants native to a geographic area are most likely suitable for the region’s extreme temperature fluctuations and drought conditions. Depending on the laws in your area, you may only be allowed to plant native species around your building. You want to consider potential drought or freezing conditions in your area. Native plants are designed to withstand these conditions and can work year round.

Maintenance

Landscaping maintenance has the potential to be overlooked when designing a space. Once the plants are planted and the irrigation and lighting systems are installed, an ordinary construction team would be on their way to the next project. But we always consider the landscape maintenance our clients will have to undergo once the project is finished. We encourage construction owners to pick plants and landscaping designs they can keep up with. Whether it’s mowing, watering, or weeding, plants still need care once the construction project is finished.

Every government has different laws to consider when it comes to landscaping around your commercial construction property. We’re experts in getting city approvals for construction projects, so check out some of our work, and contact us here or at 904-261-0059
